Some people responded and sent us gifts to pay for our monthly bills. We consider it specially miraculous when God’s provisions come from “unexpected” people. With no clear source of regular adequate support, we are experiencing literally how “to live by faith and not by sight” (2 Cor. 5:7) “as strangers in a foreign land” (2 Pet. 2:11). We praise the Lord every time we remember you are all praying for us. In Christ, we sincerely want to thank you.

Ministry Updates

The Missions Training Center is going strong. The students have proven to be relentless and determined to learn. Pastor Shin Maung (our Burmese Pastor) and Teacher Cherry (volunteer teacher) and me (and in other times Narlin) have been working very hard in preparing lessons and teaching three hours each day. Thankfully, the other two volunteers will come and teach this month giving us a much needed break. Being the only available bus driver around, I really could use a break.

Narlin has been suffering from a terrible tooth ache but that did not stop her from ministering to the children at Grace Home. And with a little help from a friend, we had bought toys for the children. We also find the time to bring the children to the city park to enjoy a day out from their small space. Narlin is also leading a Bible Study for women every Tuesday.

Pray for the ministries that God has entrusted to us. The Missions training center is a ministry made possible only through the partnership of God’s people from different countries and denominations. Americans, Australian, Filipino and Burmese Christians are working

Pray for the Grace Home Day Care Center. The center is attracting more parents asking us to take care of their children, that is, even though we raised the fees a little bit. Please pray for financial resources for our plan to expand the ministry next year. We hope to integrate a hostel ministry for the older children of the Burmese migrant workers. Any kind of help are welcome.

Reuven's second birthday in Mae Sai

Reuven shared his birthday celebration with Zerick. The son of another Filipino missionary couple working in an Agricultural NGO here in Mae Sai. Reuven is 9 years old and Zerick is 4. We surely has been missing home so we celebrated it in Filipino way with “pabitin” and “hataw-palayok.” The missionary kids were gathered together and enjoyed their special time together.

Please continue to pray for missionary children here as they continue to try to live normally in their new country. They have special needs and many of us, Filipino missionaries are struggling and at lost on what is the best thing to do for our growing children. If you know some organizations that can help us, we will be happy to know about it.

Home schooling show down

Another big concern is our children home schooling. Fortunately enough, through God’s sovereign plan, most missionary families with younger children came here almost at the same time with us last year. And because of our common situation and shared experiences, the parents organized creative activities for the children that would enrich their social life and enhance academic learning.

On first of September, missionary kids had gathered together for a home schooling showdown. Children recited memory verses, presented songs and other stuff. And together they presented a mini-play. It was a great experience for the children.

Please pray specifically for our children’s home schooling. This has been an endless struggle for us and for the children themselves. Learning at home by their own is not easy. Please pray for better coordination with their school back home, for our children’s diligence in their study and for God’s provision.

We have been invited to join this year sixth annual CHN Getaway on October 29-November 1, 2007. CHN is Christian Hospitality Network, a ministry dedicated to providing opportunities for rest and renewal to pastors and missionaries. This is CHN’s way of encouraging the missionaries for their sacrifices and acts selfless service. It is an expression of their appreciation. This year event will be held at Phuket Orchid Resort in Phuket, Thailand.

Times of refreshing

We are praying that we can come to this activity. Here we will meet other missionaries and CHN will also provide medical services and counseling. This is offered to missionaries at no cost. However, we need to raise fund for our transportation and because we are five in the family, we need big amount to join. Nonetheless, we know that this will be a time of refreshing and encouragement for us. Although we can never have that amount, we are praying that if God will allow us to enjoy this time, we believe that He will provide. We would appreciate if you can help us join this activity, you can deposit an amount in our bank account and inform us that it is specifically for this purpose.

Pray for Myanmar

Please pray for Burma by whom God has called us to serve with its people. The situation is getting nasty and people are being killed as the military troops opened fire on the demonstrators. They imprisoned the Buddhist monks who initiated and mobilized the masses to protest against the 45 year reign of an oppressive government. We expressed solidarity with the oppressed people of Myanmar. We ask you to join us to pray for a peaceful change in Burma. Let us join the protests and obey the biblical mandate to speak up against injustice committed against the people.

We stand with Burmese protesters. The roar of global public opinion is being heard in hundreds of protests outside Chinese and Burmese embassies, people round the world wearing the monks' color red, and on the internet-- where petitions has exploded to over 200,000 signers in just 72 hours. If you want to join and sign the petition please click here. We live very close to Burma and our closest friends here are all Myanmar nationals. I know their stories, their sufferings and their hopes that someday Myanmar will become a free country. My heart breaks when soldiers and police started firing at protesters and killed people in the process. The monks who mobilized the masses to join the protests are all forcibly locked up in their respective monasteries. According to the news the protests falter after the crackdown. “The streets of Myanmar's two biggest cities were eerily quiet on Saturday after a brutal crackdown on demonstrators seeking to end 45 years of military rule. Soldiers quickly snuffed out one small demonstration in Yangon, dragging several men to waiting trucks.”

This development is really sad as I thought that the sacrifices that the monks and the people of Myanmar had been protesting for weeks. I do not want the protests to end. I do not want it to end this way. I want it to end the way it should be, attaining its goal—freedom for Myanmar people. But there is still hope. My hope has been kept alive by people who have been protesting in their own countries where the Myanmar embassies are located. Hope has been kept alive by Christians who are not only praying for a peaceful change in Myanmar but for Christians who follows the biblical mandate to speak against injustices and be in solidarity with the suffering people of Burma.

The picture is from Yahoo! Her call somehow ended up in Baguio City to a friend who we have never seen in a while but has been faithfully supporting us. Hearing her warm voice with genuine concern on the other end of the line, help us realized that God has never let us down. People remember us. We thank you for your continued prayers… but we are begging you to please mobilize for us by asking your church to pray for us.

God has been so gracious to us. He sees to it that our time here in Mae Sai will not be spent largely on personal activities. We believe that God brought us here to do his ministry. Some of our activities may look trivial, but we consider them as God’s ways of expanding his kingdom here in the border of Thailand and Myanmar. Please continue to pray for the ministries.

Pray for the Missions Training Center. The center is in its third month. Pray for unity and forbearance among the teachers. Teachers are from different countries and denominations. Pray that in Christ, we can work together in harmony. Pray also for the five students that will have the patience and maturity required for future leaders, church planters and evangelists. Joey is currently teaching Asian Religions and Narlin had just finished teaching song leading.

Pray for the Seminary Education by Extension (SEE). Joey has been approached by local Pastors and being asked to help them get their theological education. Pray that coordination with PBTS will go smoothly. In spite of the internet communication, coordination is not really easy as we think it is.
Pray for the Grace Home Kindergarten Center (GHKC). As time passes by, our relationship with the parents is closer.

Pray that this relationship will continue to grow. Although they are Buddhists, the parents are willing to attend the Bible Study every Friday afternoon. Pray that through this BS, the parents will have a lasting personal relationship with Christ.

Pray for the primary school. Narlin is no longer supervising the local teachers as she used to do. They are now capable enough to do the teaching themselves without close supervision. She just checks their lesson plan from time to time.

Pray for the children home ministry that we helped start a month ago. We wrote letter to our fellow workers here and two of them responded by giving the initial financial support. The need to house some of the children studying at primary school became urgent. They could not go back to the villages where they come from because of extreme poverty and the location has no access to basic services like electricity, water, hospital and school. We worked together with the church to provide these children a home where they will be taken care of. We are envisioning that these children will become the future leaders.

Pray for our bus ministry. As Jepth and Apple (Filipino missionary couple working in Chiang Mai) gave us their Nissan Urvan, coming with it is the understanding that it will be used for the ministry. Joey is the official bus driver. Transporting the children of the, GHKC, church’s nursery and the primary school everyday 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon. The van is also being used for transporting people to the church every Sunday and also for the weekday activities. The increase in attendance is noticeable. Through the bus ministry, we are able to know the homes of the children and come to know their parents in a more personal way. Bus ministry that includes a quick visitation. Driving is not an easy job but it is rewarding and fun.

Please pray that our support will become more regular. Last month, we end up literally begging to our friends to send us money for our monthly bills. It was very embarrassing but we ran out of options. We are hoping that we will not beg again for next months.

Please pray for Philippine Global Mission (PGM). We pray that PGM will become a full-pledged mission sending body that is able to mobilize, provide missionary care and support their missionaries in the field. Please pray for Dr. Henry and Ate Sonia Silbor (PGM, Chairman) as they struggle financially and emotionally for Dr. Silbor’s dialysis. We pray that God will provide for their needs and God would give them calm assurance and comfort.

We are hoping to send a Video CD of our mission activities and updated missionary profile. But it is hard to find the time. I have to stay awake until early morning to type this update. Our computer’s DVD drive is acting that making the promotional material almost impossible. We are all sharing one computer right now. Jared is becoming more proficient in computer than his father. We are praying for another computer. You can visit Jared’s blog here.

On other note, we thank the Lord for blogger friends, one of them, Dr. Ben Myers who made a friendly appeal to donate theological books for us. The response was overwhelming as individuals, publishers, book sellers and distributor donate theological books for Joey personally and for the Missions Training library.Joeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04037540294379020064noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33013591.post-54467833346631028422007-07-07T23:48:00.000+07:002007-07-07T23:57:05.112+07:00Another update
The mission training hall is almost finished

Mission training class holding session at the church library

The mission training school is on its second week. Two more missionaries commit themselves to teaching some courses. Our vision is to have these students deployed in the villages to do evangelism and church planting. Pray for the unity, love and trust among the “faculty” as we worked together. Pray also for the five students that they may be trained and equipped to do what God has called them to accomplish for His glory. God has also provided us a good interpreter. We also praise the Lord for the financial provision for this ministry. We also thank the Lord for PBTS and CSM for helping out in teaching materials that we can use for the training.

Narlin turned down another offer to teach English in a foreign-owned language center here because she does not have the time to do it. All her time is spent in the Primary School and Grace Home. There are times when we are tempted to work so that we can have regular source of income and reduce the stress of thinking if our support will come on time or not. God has been showing us that He is the God who never fails to provide. Please help us in prayer and mobilizing regarding our financial support.

Jeph Garcia, another Filipino missionary serving in Chong Tawng , up to the mountains in the outskirts of Chiang Mai, has given us his Nissan Urvan that we will use as school bus for the primary school and Grace Home Daycare Center. God’s blessings are pouring upon us because we know that you are all praying fervently for us and the ministries that God has entrusted to us.

Please pray as we are going to extend our visa for another year next week. The immigration rules have been changing a lot lately and immigration officers have a hard time implementing them thus many foreigners are having a hard time extending their visa. Please pray that everything will go smoothly. We also thank the Lord for using people to help us financially specifically for this need.

Pray for Narlin as she runs the Grace Home Kindergarten Center. We hired a staff that will help in cleaning and cooking. The salary will be taken from our personal support. She is also work as acting principal and adviser of the newly set up Mae Sai Primary School and Orphanage Center in our church. We have more than 30 pupils from grade 1 to grade 5. Please help us pray for a van that we can use as a school service. She will also be coordinating educational training in the community this year in partnership with our church and World Education Consortium (WEC). In addition to this, she is still holding English club (free English lesson) every afternoon in the community. Please pray for strength and wisdom.

Please pray for the start of the Mission Training Center today. Five students out of seven people passed the screening and interview. The participants come from different tribal groups both in Myanmar and Mae Sai. Joey will be teaching full time (3 hours a day) together with a partner from the US. This is nine-month training for future pastors, evangelists and church planters. Joey is also acting as the Pastor of the International congregation of Mae Sai Grace Church by which the community have been working together to reach the lost people of the Mekong Region.

Pray for the Dela Paz children—Jared, Jillian and Reuven as they struggle to adjust in the community and their home schooling. It has been different when they first arrived, when they thought everything seems new and exciting, when the neighbors are excited to see the strange neighbors. The novelty and excitement are gone and they are faced with the reality that they don’t exactly fit. Home schooling is tough for them and for us as well. We need help.

We praise the Lord for the unexpected support that has been pouring upon us. But there are months when support doesn’t come as we expected it to be. This month of June is one of those months. Although we have received substantial help financially for our visa this month, part of it had been used for our daily expenses. Please pray for a more regular support.

Joeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04037540294379020064noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33013591.post-87370970434121330362007-05-24T13:32:00.001+07:002007-05-24T15:54:20.936+07:00Summer English Camp 2007

This blog has been neglected. Thirty people attended the Summer Bible Camp and five people accepted Christ as their God and Savior. In all our prayers for all of you, we always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. (Phil. 1:3-6)

We share the sentiments of the Apostle Paul when he wrote these words to the Philippian Christians. Our hearts are full of joy as we think of all of you who have been helping us through your prayers and generosity. We are comforted by the assurance that God’s work that has been started will be brought to completion. God has been doing great things in our lives from which we are thankful for.

We thank the Lord for the opportunity He had given us to continually minister with Thai and Myanmar people through the church we are now part. The free English classes that we have been offering to the community are expanding. Students come and go, but this scheme seems to work for good for the spread of the gospel to the people in the community. We have the opportunity to know and befriend more people.

God has given us the motorcycle we have been praying for over a year. Although we have yet to pay the motorcycle within three months, we are confident that God will touch people to help us in paying for it.

The nursery ministry is getting better and more organized under Narlin’s leadership as time goes by. We will have a recognition program this 3rd of April as a venue to appreciate the works that the children had done and to honor the parents. This is also a good opportunity to once again share the gospel.

We thank the Lord for his provision for our children’s home schooling. We had doubts from the beginning how we could sustain the high cost of home schooling as we consider the heavy burden it would cause to the people who express their desires to help. But God is faithful, he provides and he sustains.

We are grateful for 4 people (and more to come) who have been baptized during our church anniversary celebration. Everybody in the church believes that winning people to Christ is not the work of any individual but is a cooperative effort among us.

We praise the Lord as the church is growing not necessarily in numbers but also in many aspects of faith and in outlook in taking the opportunity in sharing Jesus’ stories and also helping in the needs of the poor people in Mae Sai.

We thank Jesus for the gift of tongues. Formal language study is one necessary thing we need to have but we can’t afford, but with God’s grace we are actually acquiring it with the passing of time. It may take some time but we are not in a hurry.

Please continue to uplift us in your prayers as we are facing another major difficulty in our year of stay here.

Pray for God’s provision as we renew our one-year volunteer visa this coming June. We need about 30,000 baht for our visa. God had done miracles before regarding this matter. We believe that he will touch people again to help us with this struggle.

We still need to pay some amount for the motorcycle. We know that some friends are trying their best to mobilize for us regarding this and this gives us the assurance that eventually the payment for the motorcycle will be taken care of in the near future.

Pray for the unity of Christians in the mission field. Our vision is that denominational doctrines and practices would not cause conflicts and divisions among Christians whose ultimate purpose is to win people to Christ for the greater glory of the Father.

Pray for the Day Care Center, the center are lacking in funds but not lacking with commitment of people who volunteers to work there. We have 3 teachers and one utility man. The Dela Paz family is trying to help the nursery financially.

Pray for the Mission Training School that Pastor Shin Maung, Pastor David and Pastor Joey are envisioning to start this coming June. Pray for God’s approval and provisions.

We are so thankful to the Lord for the people who have been emailing us and giving us encouragement. As we stay here in Mae Sai, we also think of our country. We are praying for the Philippines especially for this coming election. We are not losing our hope that God can make something good comes out of seemingly bad (political) situation we are experiencing right now. We long to come home one day, but we all know it will take a long time before we can do that.

With much prayer,

Joey, Narlin, Red, Jillian and Ven
Mae Sai, ThailandJoeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04037540294379020064noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33013591.post-40496537912386950612007-03-02T15:53:00.000+07:002007-03-02T16:02:59.563+07:00Church 3rd Anniversary CelebrationOur church here will celebrate its 3rd Anniversary on March 11. We'll be very busy again working on the program and church decorations. 8 people will be baptized as part of the celebration.

Our digicam is broken We found it out when I was about to take pictures of our church visitors one Sunday that it was broken from an impact. The children and young people had a great time. Tat Dawn was happy to celebrate her birthday for the first time in her life (Buddhists usually don't celebrate their birthday although deep inside they always like to do so.) Her relatives and friends joined us in the celebration. Pastor Mong prayed for her. We observed that Thais in our community have a fascination about Christmas. I mentioned this before, they like Christmas songs especially their children. We often hear Christmas tune used as ringing tone in their cell phones. The definitely like Christmas decorations especially the tree.

So when we set up our little Christmas tree about three weeks ago, our neighbor's children came and help us decorate the tree while the older people watch in our front door and enjoyed watching us doing things to the poor Christmas tree. We do here what we were doing back home put up the tree and hang those beautiful blinking colorful Christmas lights and our neighbor would stare at them and we see the delightful smiles in their faces. They enjoyed their time in the seminar and we prayed that somehow our efforts had helped them.
Joeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04037540294379020064noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33013591.post-54777494396843061402006-12-11T23:29:00.000+07:002006-12-12T00:39:53.852+07:00Our saddest day
After three weeks of staying with us, Sam Wise the brave died today. In case he might do it one day, you can still read the posts on the other blog. Now for the good news, we have a pet. Read this.

Since we came here, our children wanted to have pet so badly. I know they prefer to have a dog. We had a wonderful pet back home named Duke he was good and smart dog. But two months ago we received news that he has died. So, we were always on the look out for a puppy. Here they don't give out their puppies. In the Philippines you just ask for them and they will give it to you right away here even if you are somebody important, they will refuse. Here, puppies cost 500-5,000 baht of course, it defends on the breed. So every time we would saw puppies for sale, we would look the other way, pretending not to see anything. Today, at the Grace Home Kindergarten Center, a puppy was waiting for us. The kids are happy and excited... they finally have a pet. We named him Sam. (After our favorite character in TLOR- Sam Wise, the brave).

Joeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04037540294379020064noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33013591.post-52575011214862585582006-11-12T14:40:00.000+07:002006-11-14T15:26:29.026+07:00Jared's Birthday
Jared celebrate his 14th birthday in a very simple breakfast candle-blowing celebration. All fo us celebrated our birthdays here this year. We miss home a lot.

My children are not living a life that normal children should be. They don't have permanent friends because we have moved five times with in their lifetime. We moved from Cainta to Pangasinan to Baguio, back to Cainta again in six short months and finally moved here in Thailand.

They never experienced the joy of childhood both Narlin and I had. We never left our respective homes until we were married. We have permanent friends and best friends who grew up with us. And althoug distance keeps us apart, communication was never lacking. We grew up in our respective home church with people who love us and treated us as part of their family. (These people are the ones who are supporting us here in the mission field). We matured with them both physically and spiritually. My children never enjoyed this kind of relationships.

Jared is in the second year of his teenage life. He never had friends who grew up with him. (My bestfriend lived in the next house and we were together until I responded to the call). Jared hates school. He always thought that teachers do not teach but talk to the (black)board. The only teacher he was fond of was his grade 4 teacher who took him under her care. And as a parent, I was greatly grateful to that teacher who perhaps changed Jared's perspective about education. Jared hates home schooling as well. And if I were him, I will feel the same. Home schooling materials are the most boring educational material I've ever read. But we are thankful for home schooling and for the people who made this possible for us because it is the only way he and his siblings can have their education. He likes computer. I think he learned to use the computer first before he learn to talk. He can create his own website, he knows how to mess with html code,he maintained and designed this blog (and the other blog), he knows how to install and configure Linux from the root terminal which I didn't learn and perhaps will never have a chance to learn.

In his 14th birthday, he is holding on to his childhood for as long as he can. He doesn't want it to go. And I understand it... I want him to enjoy it as long as it last because his childhood will be gone sooner than we thought. We thank the Lord that we are here in the mission field together. We share everything, the good and the bad, the happy and the sad, the joy and the sorrow, the love and the hate, the excitement and the boredom. I'm not afraid that my children will be lost from our side... because we are together in responding to God's call. Happy birthday Jared!!!Joeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04037540294379020064noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33013591.post-17528699822730659462006-11-05T01:36:00.000+07:002006-11-05T02:05:35.053+07:00Loy-Krathong Festival
Today the whole Thailand is in festive mood because of the celebration of the Loy-Krathong festival. Here in Mae Sai it feels like Christmas. The people are walking outside the main streets with their family relaxing and celebrating. We also have "perya" here but better I guess. Only very few rides but the carousel really looks impressive. The big inflatable giant slide is attracting a lot of children. There is also a tiangge hosted by the Chinese near their temple for fund raising. The long and wide road leading to the border is full of people selling anything foods, dress, jackets, lanterns, books, finger foods, kakanin, almost anything.

Nonetheless the most important place today for Thais and Burmese Buddhists is the river. People come to the river to float their Krathong. "Krathong" is a "lotus-shaped vessel made of banana leaves". The Krathong usually containts a candle, three joss-sticks, some flower and coins. And "loy" means "to float."

The festival is considered by many as Brahmin in origin in which the people offer thanks to the goddess of water. Under the light of the fullmoon people light the candles and the joss sticks, make a wish and launch their krathongs on canals, rivers or even small ponds. It is believed that the krathong carry away sins and bad luck , and the wishes that have been made for the new year starts. It is indeed a time of celebration as people thought that their sufferings and bad luck are floating away.

Here in Mae Sai the festival starts on Saturday night and will go on until Sunday night. We will be back at the river tomorrow to observe the festival. People from all walks of life, young and old, rich and poor, Thai and Burmese will be together in this festival. After making a wish as if in deep prayer they would gently release their krathongs to the water and let them drift away until they are out of sight.

There are also people who sell fishes, crabs, and whatever water creatures are there and people will buy them on their way to the river. I see some of them hold the plastic in their two hands as if in prayer and press it on their forehead and after making a wish they release the fish to the river. I guess they do it to attract good fortune.

Although there are lots of symbolisms in this festival, the people are now doing it for fun. If there is religious significance in it, I am sure that only very few are taking this activities for spiritual reasons. Of course, I believe that Christians should not participate in this activities not because of its religious meaning but for the lack of it. We enjoy the festivities as casual observers. I hope to see more of it tonight.Joeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04037540294379020064noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33013591.post-82045031135880210892006-10-31T15:17:00.000+07:002006-10-31T15:40:41.594+07:00Grace Home Kindergarten Center

Grace Home Kindergarten Center (GHKC, yes that's our new name) in partnership with International Rescue Commission (IRC) held its first seminar on AIDS/HIV Awareness on October 27-28, 2006. These families were visiting our neighbors who are worshippers of Allah. We are fully aware that we are living in a Muslim community but I didn’t realize until then that there are in the city itself. Our Muslim neighbors opened up their houses and set tables in their living rooms so that their fellow Muslims and their families could visit their house had some time to talk and eat (not much). We watched them as they passed by our house walking playfully in both directions, some were leaving and many were still coming. It was a sight to see; they were dressed with colorful robe, small head gear for men and a beautiful veil for women. It was a joyous day for them… it was the end of Ramadan.

We are enjoying religious freedom here in Thailand. In our few months of staying here, we have won friends both from Muslim and Buddhist religion. However, I find it strange that in a place where Christianity and Islam are both marginalized, our belief in one God and to some extent in Christ have given us special affinity than the dominant religion. Of course we have many Christian friends, but our best friends here are Muslims.

On an even ground, side by side with Christianity, my opinion is that Islam would grow faster in this region because Muslims are showing a strong sense of unity than Christians. It seems they have a more intimate and loving relationship with each other. They worship in one mosque; rich and poor, young and old, from different ethnic origins—Thai, Indians, Burmese, Chinese, Malays among others. Of course women are discriminated but they come and worship anyway. I could not say the same with Christians here. Christians here are so divided in many ways maybe not by denomination but by organizations that fund and support a particular ministry. Burmese and Chinese worship separately; tribal groups have their own church building. Christians don’t know each other. Yes, there is a strong of presence of Christian here but the people don’t notice.

Besides the appearance of strong unity, another reason that Muslims have strong “witness” here is their commitment to their fixed form of worship. For them, it does not matter if they don’t understand what the language of their worship is because they understand that worship is not for their personal benefits. Worship is their act of submission and surrender to the will of Allah. Christians here are the same as Christians all over the world, the worship for their own sake; they worship for their own benefit. I would like to direct you to Dr. Jim’s observation regarding Christian’s motives for in worship. I can relate with his observations. And I find his observations are also true here. Although understanding the language is very important in worship, I think if you don’t have much choice, you have to commit yourself to a church and worship there in spite of language barrier than not to worship at all (as some other field workers are doing). We have been attending a Burmese church since we came here and although we don’t understand most part of it, I believe we genuinely worship God in spirit and truth. Isn’t it the vision of our Lord Jesus Christ that Christians worship together in unity in spite of diversity? Why do Christians are not as committed to their worship compare to other major religions of the world?

I believe it has something to do with our theology of worship. Our worship is human-centered rather than God centered. Yes God is there in our worship but we seek to satisfy our own needs than to seek to praise and worship God. It seems we can only worship the Lord if we feel like it. And if our church is unable to bring us to that stage of emotion, we conclude that we are not worshipping and look for a place that could satisfy our emotional needs.

I would want to quote Alister E. McGrath here with regards to theology and worship and although I’m a Baptist and don’t usually worship liturgically I believe he has something to say about the relationship between worship and theology. Our theology determines our worship and vice versa.

One of the most important elements of the Christian tradition is fixed forms of worship; usually know as “liturgy.” In recent years there has been a rediscovery of the fact that Christian theologians pray and worship, and that his devotional context shapes their theological reflections. This point has been appreciated since the first centuries of the Christian church. The tag lex orandi, lex credendi, which could be translated as roughly as “the way you prays determine what you believe,” express the fact that theology and worship interact with each other. What Christians believe affects the manner in which they pray and worship; the manner in which Christians pray and worship affects what they believe.
Joeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04037540294379020064noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33013591.post-3864345081564425472006-10-24T01:12:00.000+07:002006-10-24T01:34:32.763+07:00Muslim and Buddhist HolidaysToday, Muslim and Buddhist holiday are celebrated at the same day. Our Muslim friend and her husband invited us for lunch. We were so honored to be considered as their special family friends. They were actually celebrating the end of the Ramadan. This is the day when their fastings end. However, they told us that the celebration actually will be tomorrow. They just wanted us to be with them today and to enjoy the family fellowship.

The couple were actually our children's language teachers. But this relationship grows to something deeper and we appreciate their openness and acceptance. They are Muslims and we are Christians, they told us that religion really is not a barrier to true friendship. Here, there is no place for criticizing each other's religion. As friends, we learn to appreciate their religion not because we believe in it but because we know them as really good, sincere and honest people. They are genuine and not hypocrite. Our prayer is that they may also appreciate our religion, not because they believe in it but because they will see that we are sincere, honest and authentic in our relationship with them as friends.

In fact, we can tell you that they do believe in Jesus Christ. And although their knowledge of Christ is not as complete as we are, I know that deep inside their hearts the gospel was planted. And we pray that the Holy Spirit will continue to convict and speak to them, so that in the right time they can make a public confession of their faith. But I leave that work to the Holy Spirit.Joeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04037540294379020064noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33013591.post-71159004129330266562006-10-22T23:33:00.000+07:002006-10-24T01:11:31.920+07:00Prayers for MissionsI cannot over state the importance of prayer in any mission endeavors. So, I'm putting up here some very good quotations about prayer for missions. I just hope that through these quotes you may be encouraged but more so be challenged to pray for your missionaries. I beg you all to pray for us. We really could not do anything without your prayers.

"In our lifetime woudn't it be sad if we spent more time washing dishes or swatting flies or mowing the yard or watching television than praying for world missions." -- (Dave Davidson)

"Prayer needs no passport, visa or work permit. There is no such thing as a 'closed country' as far as prayer is concerned...much of the history of mission could be written in terms of God moving in response to persistent prayer." --- (Stephan Gaukroger)

"There is nothing in the world -- except the Church's disobedience -- to render the evangelization of the world in this generation an impossibility." -- (Robert Speer)

"We can reach our world, if we will. The greatest lack today is not people or funds. The greatest need is prayer." -- (Wesley Duewel)
Joeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04037540294379020064noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33013591.post-67347989652924381292006-10-14T23:15:00.000+07:002006-10-15T00:55:27.331+07:00The Face That's Everywhere
Indeed it is! Even here. We live in a culture where faith and religion are express in icons and images. There are few Christians here but it is not unusual to find this lone image of Jesus Christ hanging on the wall of their churches and homes. In fact it is unusual if you don't this image displayed somewhere at all. Besides the cross this is another image that best identified Christians here. For me, I feel some kind of comfort and easiness when I enter a place and see this image.

In the Philippines, we always have negative response when we see images of Jesus because we tend to see it as idolatry. I think it is because of our reactions to Roman Catholics excessive use of images in their worship. But here there is no such tendency to identify it with idolatry at all. In the world where in the images of the Buddha abound everywhere, to find an image of Jesus gives Christians a strong sense of faith and togetherness.

If you want to know the history of this image of Jesus, you can read it here. The image is actually called by many as a Protestant "Icon." Below is the last part of the article.

While Protestants have historically resisted using pictures in their worship, they often do, in fact, rely on Sallman's images and others in teaching children, in evangelism, and in decorating their homes. For many of them, these activities are as important for everyday life as public worship, especially in forming the early faith of children in ways that will continue to shape their piety for the rest of their lives. This is why even a glimpse of Sallman's pictures can open a deluge of memories. The picture hangs around.
Joeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04037540294379020064noreply@blogger.com0
